I’ve had this unit now for about 2 months. My goal in buying the unit was 2 fold. #1 I wanted and needed to transfer VHS to dvd. #2 I wanted a decent quality vcr to replace well pretty much all my vcr’s that aren’t working now at a reasonable price. This machine so far has delivered. While I don’t think any dvd, vhs or combo quite have as many functions or lives up to the more heavy duty units of the past (my Magnavox lasted 25 years and only died do to surge from storm recently) I was pleasantly surprised that this unit doesn’t seem real cheesy like most. To me this was simple to operate right out of the box being familiar with other similar machines. It does not have a tuner built in but I didn’t need or want this. Personally I think units with built in tuners are a waste of time and you can’t get all the channels they would apparently have you believe. I prefer the built in hard drive which all but went away when the units with built in tuners came out. My only peeve about the unit is that when I transfer VHS I am having a difficult time figuring out how to create chapters? This may have to be done while in transfer process but if this is the case it devalues the unit somewhat so I gave ease of use 4 stars. It gives the indication you can do it after but I’ll have to read and see if I missed something. So far all my transfers have one long chapter but its still better than VHS convenience wise but still preferrable to have chapters. The only other thing I can think of that would have been a nice feature would have been a fast dub feature but I guess thats pusshing it. I hope these are available for a while. Seems these are quickly fading into oblivion even though it seems theres still seems to be a demand. Good unit JVC. Thanks.

For those who want the convenience of DVD and VHS playback in a single unit, JVC offers the HR-XVC11B DVD/VCR combo. For recording TV programs to VHS, the deck includes JVC’s Timer Link, a quick and easy solution for recording TV programs by connecting to a cable or satellite set-top box using an AV cable. The user selects the desired program using the set-top box electronic program guide and timer function. JVC’s Timer Link feature senses the signal, automatically powers up the recorder and begins recording. Recording automatically stops and the recorder shuts off when the program ends. JVC research shows that the vast majority of set-top boxes come equipped with a timer. Other HR-XVC11B features include multi DVD (-R/RW and +R/RW) and JPEG playback, a coaxial digital output and AV analog input.

The machine is working perfectly so far. The only problem that I have had with it had to do with my not knowing hat tuner-free meant when I ordered it, consequently there is no place to screw the coax into the back. It plays DVD’s and Tapes perfectly but that is all that it does. The clock, the timer and all the recording on the VCR does not work at all.This comes from being ignorant of all the changes in the machines.I guess that I will just have to keep bumbling through.

Simple, easy, nice unit by Sony. Having many video tapes that needed to be transferred, I tried my computer but it was cumbersome to do the transfers. This allows easy transfer to DVD using any format including DVD-RW for recording tv shows. My only complaint is the unit does not allow you to name your DVD so when you pop in into your computer, it comes up with the stock Sony name. Minor complaint because you can still edit and name the video via the unit on screen so when it sees a DVD player, you know what is on the DVD. Let’s hope the prices keep coming down!

DVD/VHS Combo DVD Player

I bought this recently at a Best Buy and was terribley dissapointed when I found out that there was no s-video for the vcr and the only way to have the vcr and dvd player share the same output was to use composite, and so after setting up this unit to two different inputs (one for composite and the other for component) I tried watching a movie on dvd and found that this unit responds almost instantly to commands from the remote and the unit only makes sounds when it’s reading the disc. For the vcr, it plays fine, but since I only need it to play vhs tapes, I haven’t tried recording anything, so I wouldn’t know about that.

It’s a great dvd player, but so-so as a dvd-vcr combo.

Magnavox MWR20V6 not only plays DVDs, CDs and VHS tapes but also offers features for you to record on DVD discs and edit them after that.

I got a refurbished Magnavox MWR20V6 DVD Recorder / VCR Combo in mid November. It works well and is easy to use. I was very pleased about how quickly I got it, too. The only thing I’m not completely pleased about is the Owner’s Manual. The way it is set up is confusing. It is not an original manual, so the company I bought the VCR/DVD Combo from simply made a photo copy of the manual without putting the pages in the correct order. After reading the reviews and realizing that most of the positive ones were 5 years old (2004), I was really wondering if I had made a mistake. I had to go through several DVD’s before I found the match. Calling the Sylvania 1 800 number on the top of the player/recorder gave me great customer service. The call was picked up quickly, I had the rep walk me through the error messages. All my of my DVD’s resulted in error messages, so I was politely asked if I would be willing to be put on hold while the rep did some research. After a few minutes, he came back (thanks Jason) with a list of makes and types that would work. Looked for them on-line and found them right away. Delivered today and I’ve been recorded from the TV to vhs, from the TV to DVD, from DVD to VHS and from VHS back to DVD. I also recorded music Cd-r and video on a dvd-r on my laptop and they played beautifully. Quick setup because I had an old sylvnia VHS recorder and DVD player so the remote and the front panel are almost exactly the same. Just swapped out the old one and I was ready to go — with the right DVD’s. and here they are: Fujifilm DVD-R, 4X. Yes, you can get a lemon, but my DVR90VE came from Discounts Jungle, is refurbished and comes with a 90-day warranty so I recommend them as well. Hope this helps. Happy New Year!
